Health and Life Insurance Benefits

UTMB provides eligible employees with a basic coverage package effective the first day of employment. The basic coverage package includes employee only medical; $40,000 in basic group term life insurance; $40,000 in basic accidental death and dismemberment insurance; and a prescription drug plan.

• If you work 30 hours or more per week, UTMB will pay 100% of your premiums for the basic coverage package and up to 50% of the premiums for your dependents’ medical coverage.
• If you work 20 to 30 hours per week, UTMB will pay 50% of your premiums for the basic coverage package and up to 25% of the premiums for your dependents’ medical coverage.

The university also offers the following optional coverage:

• Dental and vision coverage
• Short-term and long-term disability insurance
• Basic and supplemental life insurance and AD&D insurance
• Long-term care for you and your eligible dependents
• Health care and dependent day care flexible spending accounts

Retirement Savings Plans

UTMB’s benefits program includes a variety of retirement plans to help you save.

Mandatory Retirement Plans
The Teacher Retirement System (TRS) is offered to the majority of employees. With this plan, employees contribute 8.0% of their salary and the state of Texas contributes 8.0%.

The Optional Retirement Program (ORP) is an alternative retirement plan available to designated faculty members and administrative and professional employees only. With this plan, employees contribute 6.65% of their salary and the State of Texas contributes 8.5%.

Voluntary Retirement Plans
Employees may also participate in a tax-sheltered annuity plan or a deferred compensation plan on a tax-deferred basis through payroll deductions.

Paid Time Off Program

Benefits-eligible employees will have access to a flexible paid time off program. All leave time is proportionate to your regular full-time or part-time employment status, beginning on the first day of employment and ending on the last day worked.

The UTMB Nurse Residency Program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The evidence-based entry to practice program for new graduate nurses utilizes the Vizient/AACN Graduate Nurse Residency Program curriculum. It supports professional role transition, integration and socialization to enable residents to move from an entry-level advanced beginner nurse to a competent professional nurse who provides safe, efficient and quality patient care.

All nurses in their first year of practice are automatically enrolled in the 12-month program. Available Nurse Clinician I positions are posted at the unit level. To apply:

• Search for Nurse Clinician I positions.
• Each job posting will include the hiring department and location for your reference.
• To view the job description for a particular position, click on the job title.
• Click on the Apply Now button to create an application profile.
• Enter the requested information, upload your resume and submit your application.
• Please note that not all applicants will receive a department interview.
• Once a position is filled, an auto-generated email will be sent to all those who applied.

Paid and Unpaid Military Leave
At UTMB, you may receive up to 15 days of a paid military leave each year if you are called to active duty or authorized training as a member of the state military forces or any of the reserve components of the U.S. Armed Forces.

You also may be eligible for Military Family Leave under FMLA if you have a spouse, child or parent who is on active duty or has been called to active duty status, and you may be entitled to up to 26 weeks of unpaid leave in a single 12-month period if you are the primary care giver of a covered service member who has been injured while on active duty.

Veterans’ Educational Benefits

The VA Certifying Official for UTMB serves as a liaison between students and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, State Approving Agency and other stakeholders.
