Min Qualifications


Bachelor Degree in architecture or related field and 8 years of related work experience in architecture and planning.


Responsible for understanding and implementing the healthcare, academic and institutional customers’ current and forecasted space needs and uses that information for facilities programming and space planning. Responsible for assessing space needs and programs in relation to national space planning benchmarks for academic medical centers. Responsible for strategic front end planning for owned and leased facilities to ensure that space planning is in alignment with the institutional master plan. Assures that the move-in activities and substantial completion meets standards set by the UTMB executive leadership. Leads projects during the programming and schematic design phases and supports/collaborates with Design and Construction project managers / construction managers during the design development, construction documentation and move-in phases of the projects. Responsible for planning studies, space gap analysis and master planning. Assures that the design guidelines, master plan, and policies for campus access (ADA), wayfinding, art, and space standards are adhered to on healthcare projects.

Specific Job Related Duties


  • Develops strategic planningconceptsfor implementation ofthe UTMB master plan and other initiatives.

  • Responsibleforplanningandprogramming healthcarefacilitiesandensuringadherence toapplicablecodesfor healthcarefacilities, specificallythe FGI guidelines.

  • Responsiblefor leadingapproved projects duringthe programmingand schematicdesign phases.The senior planner willbe aliaisonbetween the customersand architectural/engineeringconsultants.

  • Assists and supportsproject managersduringdesign development through activation phasesfor construction projects.Is responsibleforassuringthat space is usedas intendedand codedcorrectlyto the departments.

  • Provides planningexpertiseforhealthcarefacilityplanning, products, services and industrybenchmarks.

  • Communicates with and presentsprojectsatkeymilestones todepartmental and executive level.

  • Develops spaceplanningconcepts andprogramsaccordingtotheUTMB Space ManagementPolicy, Campus Master Plan, institutional space standards,furniture standards,architectural guidelines, life safety, accessibility, buildingcode requirements,

spaceadjacencies,equipment, ITneeds andspaceutilization standards, concludingwith theappropriatehandoff tothe Design andConstructionteam.

  • Prepares clear and concise departmentalpresentationdataforexistingor futurefacilities programstudies, special or specificprojects or other relatedtasksasrequired.

  • Prepares/administersprofessional agreements.

  • Evaluates general contractors and Architects/Engineers in relationtoprojects within the responsibilityofthis role.

  • Verifies that thepreliminarybudget and schedule are consistent withthe initial project intent.

  • Assists with the capitalplanningandbudgetingprocess, helps developlongtermfacilities strategies and communicates with internal and external stakeholders,focusingon the continued success ofthe institution.

  • Assists in the preparation of the UTMB Capital ImprovementPlan, the Campus Master Planandanyother special studies, reports,proposals or specialized dataanalysis regardingUTMBfacilities.

  • Interacts with project teams, outsideconsultantsand customers.

  • Conducts space surveys in accordance with required standardsandprocedures, working with the appropriatefacultyand staffto ascertain current utilization ofthe spaceassigned totheirdepartment asrequired.

  • Learnsnewcomputersoftware,as theposition requires.

  • Adheres tointernal controls and reportingstructure.

  • Performsrelated duties andspecialprojectsas required.

Preferred License/Certificate

Architect License

Preferred Work Experience

4 years of experience in an academic helathcare setting.
