Min Qualifications

High school or equivalent and one year of laboratory animal experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION: To provide for the skilled care of laboratory animals in a humane, safe and sanitary manner using appropriate equipment and established procedures.

Specific Job Related Duties

  • Performs routine duties associated with cage washing, sanitation and preparation for use in animal research facilities including cage prep, assembly, monitoring equipment for proper function and maintaining sanitary conditions.
  • Monitors and processes caging requests on a daily basis to ensure the completion and quality assurance of each order.
  • Assist in the coordination and scheduling of complex caging ordering requirements between animal facilities.
  • Acts as a mentor to new staff.
  • Maintains records associated with cage wash operations.
  • Feeds and waters animals as needed.
  • Sanitizes rooms, equipment and hallways as assigned.
  • Observes animals for behavior change and/or evidence of disease and notifies staff as appropriate as needed.
  • Provides routine treatment for common disease problems and performs animal identification tasks using established methods as needed.
  • Attends in-house training programs to become more knowledgeable in the field of laboratory animal science.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for department.
  • Feeds and waters animals as specified.
  • Performs daily census of animals.
  • Changes animal caging as scheduled sanitizes rooms, equipment and hallways as assigned.
  • Assists in the maintenance of animal records.
  • Observes animals for behavior change and/or evidence of disease and notifies staff as appropriate.
  • Provides routine treatment for common disease problems and performs animal identification tasks using established methods.
  • Assists in the operation of and the record keeping for breeding colonies.
  • Attends in-house training programs to become more knowledgeable in the field of laboratory animal science.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for department.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Standard animal resources environment. Must not be allergic to animal dander, or have immunodeficiency diseases. Pregnancy may become a personnel safety factor in some laboratory animal science duties. Potential exposure to radiation and biohazards.
